IPIAAM participates in the 29th MAIIF meeting 2022-09-23

IPIAAM participated in the 29th meeting of the Marine Accident Investigators’ International Forum (MAIIF), which took place between the 12th and 16th of September, in the city of Lima, Peru.

The MAIIF is an international institution composed of the main accident investigation authorities of the IMO member states, which is dedicated to the maintenance of maritime operational safety and the prevention of marine pollution.

During the meeting, which included the participation of maritime accident and incident investigators from 25 countries, several case studies were analyzed and presented and the most pressing topics related to the prevention and investigation of maritime accidents were discussed, which resulted in an intense exchange of experiences.

Among other issues, the operational safety in the fisheries sector, the use of Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) data in investigations, the Human Factor as a cause of maritime accidents, the need for small changes in the Code of Investigation of Accidents (CIA) and the amendment of the MAIIF Investigation Manual were discussed.

IPIAAM, which was represented by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Eng.º Mário Margarito Gomes and by the Maritime Researcher, Captain-Lieutenant Areolino Delgado, being only the second African authority member of the MAIIF, assumed the commitment to lead the process of integration of the other African authorities for the constitution of a sub-delegation of the MAIIF for our continent.
